It’s a complex red wine that is aged for a minimum of 2 years and must be at least 70 percent San Giovese grapes. The region’s soil conditions, climate and geography contain the perfect balance of organic minerals, weather and drainage to produce this world renowned red wine. So naturally, among all the things to do in Montepulciano, a trip to one of its wineries is essential . There are numerous vineyards and wineries to choose from, but our personal recommendation would be to visit either Avignonesi and Azienda Agricola Poliziano for a tour or tasting. 

Places To See In Montepulciano

If you’re wondering what to see in Montepulciano, the church of San Biagio needs to be on your list. La Chiesa di Biagio, as it’s called in Italian, was constructed in the year 1540 and took 22 years to build. The inspiration for San Biagio was actually the Basilica di Santa Maria Carceri in Prato. The renaissance structure is actually located behind the town on its north side, so you might need a map, however it definitely needs to be included in your Montepulciano sightseeing Itinerary. 

Within Montepulciano, the Palazzo Ricci, is one of the town’s best preserved buildings and is now home to the European Academy for Music and Performing Arts. If you have the opportunity to visit the palazzo make sure to visit its ancient wine cellars located deep below the city.
